Description
The traditional Reyong is an enormously long instrument, 12 Bonang pans long and so big that it normally never moves from its place in the local Balinese bale (a dedicated canopy under which a Gamelan ensemble would generally reside).
We've made a version here that will separate easily into in three sections, each 4 pans long, making it relatively easy to move and to store. It is very easy to put together as the three sections are simply placed side by side.
The pans are tuned to the Balinese Pelog scale and are made from steel and brass. Each of the sections has a hardwood (jackfruit) stand and two ‘pangul’ beaters.
The Reyong can be played by 3 or 4 musicians and, like all Gamelan playing, it requires great teamwork and cooperation to create a fully authentic sound.
